Bangla Test Blog: Facilitated Bengali Unicode Blogging
A collaborative experiment with the first-ever Bangla blogger to demonstrate that Bengali Unicode text could be published on Blogger, at a time when nobody knew how to do it.
Bangla Test Blog was a collaborative experiment that was created with fellow blogger Sukanya C to demonstrate that Bengali Unicode text could be used to publish a blog on Google’s Blogger platform. At the time, this was genuinely an uncharted territory. Nobody in the Bengali-speaking online community knew whether it was possible, which fonts to use, how to configure the system, or what the output would even look like. The blog was created specifically to answer those questions, by actually doing it.
Collab with Sukanya, the First Bangla Blogger
Sukanya Chakrabarty (nee Majumdar) is credited as the first person ever to publish a blog in the Bengali language. Her blog Shonar Bangla, started in April 2004, predates the broader Bangla blogging movement and establishes her as a genuine pioneer of Bengali digital publishing.
That she co-created the Bangla Test Blog makes this experiment historically significant beyond its technical purpose. It was a collaboration between two of the earliest voices in the Indic language blogosphere, working together to open the door for an entire linguistic community. In the early-to-mid 2000s, publishing in Indian languages online was genuinely difficult. The specific challenges for Bengali blogging on Blogger were:
- Unicode encoding — was Bengali Unicode text supported? Would it survive the round-trip through Blogger’s posting and storage system?
- Font rendering — which Bengali fonts worked in browsers? Did they need to be installed on the reader’s machine?
- Input methods — how did you type Bengali text on a standard keyboard to begin with?
- Platform compatibility — did Blogger’s template system handle right-to-left or complex-script text correctly?
Broader Context
The Bangla Test Blog was part of a pattern of hands-on community infrastructure work across multiple Indian languages during this period:
- Aavaran — Hindi templates for Blogger
- Chittha Vishwa — India’s first Hindi blog aggregator
- Sarvagya — a wiki for Hindi and Indic language internet usage
- Daily Songbaad — Bengali news aggregator
The conviction behind all of these was the same: Indian language speakers deserved to participate fully in the internet, and the barrier was never linguistic, it was mostly technical. Once someone demonstrated that something was possible and showed how to do it, communities moved quickly.
